For the last two days, I have been having a fun little contest so that two lucky people will win free photo sessions. I had a blast looking at everyone's entries. The more I have been pursuing photography on the side, the more I have noticed that kids are crazy. They are crazy in that fun, loveable kind of way.
It has been almost three years since I have started taking pictures for people. When I started, I would go out on a shoot and expect all of my subjects to look straight into the camera. At that time, I thought that, that was what made a great picture. Over the last two years, my style has changed. I still try to get great images where everyone is looking at the camera, but I also spend a lot of time trying to capture families, kids, and couples in their natural state. I think it is soooo important to have images of your children that shows them for who they really were, even the really bad times. I started a Tumblr page (a micro blog) so that I would be challenged to take candids of my daughter as often as possible. When I go back and look at what she was like every day, it is bittersweet to see those changes.
I understand that everyone is not a professional photographer, and photography sessions and prints can get very pricey; however, I think of it as more of an investment. Maybe it is just the kind of person that I am, but before I started taking pictures, I saved my money and hired the best photographer around (this might depend on your style). The first time I paid $200 for a photo session and $350 for the digital images, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. That was when Gracyn was first born. The photographer (Kathy McCloy) came to us and shot Gracyn's newborn photos in the comfort of our own home, and then we ended up eventually venturing outside for a few. When I saw the images for the first time, it brought tears to my eyes; It made perfect sense why I had hired her. Most people would say that, that is silly because they are just pictures, but I disagree. Now that Gracyn is almost three years old, and extremely sassy and mobile, it is hard to remember exactly what she was like when she was an itty bitty newborn. Of course everyone has a few memories that help them remember those times, but I think we get caught up in our everyday lives and forget to capture those moments. I don't regret investing in those pictures; I have them forever.
I hope this contest inspired people to take pictures as often as possible, even if your child is having an awful day and is being completely rotten. Find a local photographer that produces images that you LOVE. Look at their galleries, see how consistent they are with their photographs, because what you see is what you are going to get. If you love all their images, find out their prices, save your money, and have them shoot your family when you are ready.
I would like to say thank you to everyone who entered the contest. I will continue to have themed contests throughout the year, so if you didn't win this time, try again next time.
